Ultra Modern Home Plans

Ultra modern home plans attract a lot of attention and have much appeal for many home owners. There is always a question, however, of just how comfortable it is to live in an ultra modern home.

The definition of ultra modern is a little fuzzy in architectural terms and even more so in home design. One good way to view it is as the opposite of traditional. It might be thought of as a home plan that goes out of the box and does not stay between the lines. Modern home plans are a little easier to put your finger on. They usually involve the current technological advances in materials and the most advantageous use of space. It is when we put that word "ultra" on a plan that we are taking an extra step into uncharted waters.

Some people see ultra modern as meaning the same thing as futuristic. Homes that look like geodesic domes or are built into the sides of mountains qualify as do underwater homes. Anything that makes us think we have wandered into a science fiction novel is generally considered ultra modern. Futuristic, however, is not really a style at all. After all, we are already in the future proposed by the science fiction writers one hundred years ago, and although they might have been prophetic about some things, they totally missed the boat on others.

So, ultra modern and futuristic are not an exact match. Ultra Modern home plans do reflect a break with the past in design concept. There is much more emphasis on shape and contrasts. The ultra modern design concept is seen by many as cold and impersonal. It is open and uncluttered. Many critics of the style complain that the ultra modern home plan is designed more to awe the passerby than to provide comfortable living to the occupants.

A recent award winning home outside of Washington, D.C. provides a good example of this. The home design was a hands down winner and really impressed the jury that made the award selection. It was an amazing blend of geometric shape, contrast between open and closed spaces and light and dark. It was open with more windows than walls and the interior was very cold with stark lines.

The problem was that the occupants were going to have to be cold and impersonal people as well or they were going to be very uncomfortable. A little bit of clutter or some old heirloom like grandma's old hutch were going to totally destroy the intended ambience of this home. With the open spaces and windows, privacy was going to be almost impossible. Ultra modern home plans are an important part of the growth and naturally progression of human beings as they seek limits and expand horizons, but potential home owners need to remember that they are going to have to live in a home, too.
