Cape Modular Home Plans

The Cape Cod home has a very distinctive look and is also very much an "American" home design. The original sturdy and utilitarian concept has made Cape modular home plans extremely popular starter homes.

The first Cape Cod homes were built by the New England settlers, not surprisingly, in the Cape Cod region. They were designed to be sturdy as a defense against the harsh New England winters. They also featured a rather simple, utilitarian design that reflected the no nonsense attitude of these early Puritan settlers. Although the Cape Cod home has evolved over the years, the spirit of this early design has made Cape modular home plans popular.

The original design of the Cape Cod home was usually either a one, or one and a half, story home. It had a very steep roof as a defense against snow accumulation. One feature that was very prominent was the shuttered windows. Early Cape Cods had two to four large shuttered windows flanking a sturdy centrally located door. The shuttered window look still marks the Cape Cod design, but the shutters are almost always ornamental today and do not actually close.

In the post World War II housing boom, the Cape Cod design became a very popular part of the expanding suburban neighborhoods. As time went on, the simple floor plans of the original styles became more elaborate and complex. It was the outward look that marked the style and not necessarily the inside floor plan.

Modular homes have gone back to a more basic floor plan to enable them to produce structures that are less expensive and easy to build. Although much variation still exists in Cape modular home plans, a return to the essence of the early sturdy and utilitarian style makes the plan popular as a starter home. The lower cost of a home featuring some factory produced elements contributes to this as well.

The Cape Cod home is one very distinctive American style that has survived since the days of the Pilgrims. It has gone through many changes and experienced unexpected revivals of popularity. Today, it has become a popular design motif of the expanding modular home industry. It is not a rigid style that restricts interior floor plans, but rather a look and a sense of sturdy and sensible design. We can expect to see this style as part of the American home landscape far into the future.
